Welcome to Video From California, my new video essay series of dispatches from the future. I began with some thoughts about the value of land/real-estate in a digital future which most things - except land/real-estate - will be driven to zero. California might be getting America’s first 3D-printed neighborhood, I acknowledge, but this is only going to compound the state’s neo-feudal inequalities.
I use the words “neo-feudal” delicately. What is emerging in California is a post-industrial feudalism driven by the new scarcities of our digital age. California might be the future; but it’s a future foreign to most futurists.
