Wish I knew what you mean by the word "work". I went to a pre-Victorian public school in England founded by Edward VI for the poor kids who were filling the streets of London particularly after the dissolution of the monasteries where they had, to some extent, been looked after. All the well-known public schools started as charities and because they were good gradually became the hugely expensive places they are today.

Christ's Hospital's Governors debated that issue in 1557 and in the end decided that it would remain a place "for the proper upbringing of the miserable youth so they may be useful".

I love the word useful and work for me is when I am being useful to others, to things or even just to me.
